Maxine Bitomski was 73 years old when she was murdered. Her body was found inside her home in Kittery, Maine, more than 25 years ago, and the person responsible for her death has yet to be brought to justice.
On the morning of Jan. 16, 1993, Bitomski was found dead by her grandson, who had come to visit her at her Cape Cod-style home on Colonial Road, according to Maine State Police and the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Bitomski was last seen alive the previous night, on Jan. 15, 1993, by her granddaughter, who went to check on her at her home.
An autopsy determined that Maxine Bitomski’s death was a homicide. However, investigators refused to reveal how she was killed.
Stephen McCausland, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, told The Bangor Daily News in 1993 that “there was suspicion right from the very start. There were some questions that only the medical examiner could answer.”
“We got those answers Sunday afternoon,” McCausland said. “And the scope of the investigation changed. We’re now talking about a homicide.”
Bitomski had lived at her home, which was located in a neighborhood off Route 236, for 40 years, but 10 of those years were spent alone after the death of her husband.
Following her death, Kittery police officials questioned her relatives, friends, neighbors, and a suspect, but no arrests have been made in connection with her death.
More than two decades have passed, and yet Bitomski’s murder remains unsolved.
